No, of course I don’t listen to her though I’ve checked out some of her songs.. Put simply, once you’re old, every second listening to music has to count. My daughter informs me that Billie Eilish is a good singer and I’d agree all the attributes are there. Just don’t get me started on her songwriting. She’s part of the production new wave that churns out songs with innocuous instrumentation. I don’t hear pianos, guitars, woodwinds, brass, strings. In fact I’m not really sure what the on earth I’m hearing. All I DO know though, is that she is now vying with Madonna for the worst Bond title song to date. Just what the hell was that number “No Time to Die”? Barely a hint of the famous Em – Em addC – Em6 riff, and more schooled in that dreary chorus from Adele’s “Skyfall” than anything else. John Barry must be turning in his grave. If you’re going to depart from the Barry rulebook, then for God’s sake apply the McCartney touch of genius and write another superlative song with an equally distinctive riff. What next for the franchise? Bond as a woman? A coloured actor? A non binary person? Surely the estate of Ian Fleming can do something to keep Eon’s producers in line?
